Young Carers Action Day: Championing Fair Futures at Wellacre

Yesterday, Wellacre proudly observed Young Carers Action Day, a national initiative that shines a spotlight on the remarkable young people who balance their education with significant caring responsibilities at home. The theme for this year, “Fair Futures for Young Carers,” calls for collective action to ensure that young carers are recognised, supported and provided with the same opportunities to succeed as their peers.

Young carers play an essential role within their families, often providing emotional support, practical help and day‑to‑day care for a parent, sibling or relative. These responsibilities can have a profound impact on their time, energy and wellbeing, making it vital that schools understand their needs and put effective support in place. At Wellacre, we remain committed to ensuring that every young carer feels valued, understood and able to thrive.

As part of our recognition of the day, we hosted a dedicated Young Carers Brunch, bringing together students who take on caring roles to share food, conversation and mutual support. The event provided a calm, welcoming environment where students could speak openly about their experiences and reflect on the challenges they face both in and out of school. It also offered an important opportunity for them to articulate what they feel would help them most during their time at Wellacre.

Throughout the morning, students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the types of support that make a meaningful difference, from flexible deadlines and quiet spaces to check‑ins with staff and opportunities to connecting with other young carers. Their contributions were honest, insightful and deeply valuable. These conversations will directly inform our ongoing work to strengthen the provision we offer, ensuring that our support is shaped by the voices of those who need it most.

Young Carers Action Day serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, maturity and compassion shown by young carers every day. We are immensely proud of the students within our community who take on these responsibilities with such dedication.
