Vegan Workshop in Food & Cookery

Year 9 students developed their understanding of veganism in a workshop with Viva, a leading vegan campaigning charity, in Food and Cookery.

Lead campaigner James Pearce delivered the workshop and explored the consequences of what we eat - on farm and wild animals, on our planet and on our health.

They learned about celebrity vegans as well as professional athletes who maintain a fit and healthy diet with a balanced plant-based diet.

James from Viva said:

“My job as an educator is not to tell people what to think but to provide them with information to make more informed decisions regarding animals and our environment. All the students participated with enthusiasm and were happy to discuss their own opinions and listen to the opinions of others. It was a pleasure to interact with the students at Wellacre who conducted themselves brilliantly and were a credit to their school.”

James also spent time with groups of students to discuss key issues including ‘what are the barriers to veganism?’ and ‘which plant-based foods contain protein?’

As part of the workshop, James offered lots of information for those considering going vegan and students had the opportunity to taste a selection of vegan options including meat, cheese and dairy alternatives.

Mrs Ashburn, Teacher of Food, Nutrition and Cookery, said:

“The session really made our students think about nutrition and alternatives which can make an impact on the planet, animals and ourselves. They couldn’t believe the volume of animals slaughtered each year.

Students were very engaged with the tasting; although the cheese wasn’t popular, lots of them loved the chocolate oat drink, vegan yoghurts and chorizo!”

These Year 9 students have opted for GCSE Hospitality and Catering next year, they will consider vegan cooking as a dietary need for consumers.

Student feedback for the workshop was positive:

Oscar said: “I enjoyed the vegan workshop as I got an idea of why people turn to vegan diets. I tried lots of vegan food which was fun.”

Laurie added: “I thought the vegan workshop was good.  I learnt how animals can be treated; it was a good insight. The food we tried wasn’t too bad!”

Mrs Sharrock, Principal said:

“We have a meat-free Monday in the canteen as part of our commitment to sustainability. The session provided food for thought for our students about their food choices. Thank you to Viva for their time.”
