Wellacre STEM Ambassadors Visit Primaries

As a lead school in the Great Science Share 2023/24, Wellacre is now visiting local primary schools to inspire students to take the lead in asking, investigating and sharing scientific questions with new audiences. 

The first stage of the Great Science Share for schools saw Wellacre deliver a CSI science event for Year 4 and 5 Trafford school children.  The next stage involves Wellacre students visiting Year 3 at Acre Hall, St. Monica’s and St. Michael’s primary school to deliver the Great Glider Share. 

The Great Glider Share is an exciting activity which introduces gravity through literacy and investigating gliders. Designed around 2023 theme Science Around Us, this investigation is inspired by the story book ‘Gary Vity’ by Jules Pottle & Rufus Cooper, and challenges pupils to uncover ‘what is the best material for the wing of a glider?’

Wellacre’s STEM Ambassadors accompanied Mrs Siddall, Second in Science, to lead the activity: Maxwell, Year 7, Joshua, Year 8, Cale and Jack, Year 9, and Elliot and Jacob, Year 10.

Mrs Siddall said:

“Our STEM Ambassadors worked really well with the Year 3 pupils with their investigation and assisting them in collecting and presenting their data.” 

Focusing on curriculum topics of everyday materials and forces, pupils used a comparative test to gather evidence to decide which material is ‘best’ for the wings by measuring how far the gliders travelled.

Jack, Year 9, said:

“I like being a STEM Ambassador and helping younger children enjoy Science. We helped them set up, switch materials and measure the distance. They asked lots of questions too, which we answered.”

Jacob, Year 10, added:

“I enjoyed making sure that the children were engaged with the activity.”
