Orienteering is an outdoor activity where you walk or run a course via a series of checkpoints, using a map for guidance.

The topic began in lessons with students researching regional and national provision for orienteering, and then defining clothing, equipment and safety considerations for the activity.

The next stage was the practical element, which saw students plan and take part in orienteering at  Urmston Meadows and Sale Water Park.  All students also undertook their own risk assessment before carrying out the challenge independently.

Mr Whitehead, Teacher of PE, said:

“This is the first year for the OCR Sport Studies course at Wellacre and our first experience of orienteering. Largely, Wellacre students excelled in the challenge! It was a fantastic opportunity to take our learning outside of the classroom and into a community setting.

“Students confidently demonstrated a wide range of relevant skills and knowledge during this outdoor and adventurous activity.”

Skills developed through this unit include  map reading, navigation skills, independence, effective use of equipment and following safe practices.  Once all practicals are completed, students undertake an evaluation of their performance.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, commented:

“Orienteering is a fantastic new challenge for most of our students and was enjoyed by all. Great effort boys.”
