Year 7 Honour Keyworkers

As part of Wellacre’s Co-Curricular Art Club, Year 7 students have been creating stamps to enter the Royal Mail Heroes Stamp Design competition.

The Royal Mail competition is the latest in 50 years of the special stamp programme, which commemorates British history and achievement.  This latest collection will honour all the heroes of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mrs Larsen, Teacher of Art, said:

“During the pandemic, Wellacre boys have seen a great many people in their lives doing fantastic work from NHS workers, teachers, fundraisers, neighbours looking out for each other, and care workers to name a few. We wanted to be a part of this competition to reflect and recognise the extraordinary efforts of them all.”

The stamp competition offers an opportunity for school children to have their designs featured on a Royal Mail stamp in a collection of eight.

During the P6 Summer term,  we have been asking Year 7 artists to think about who their hero or heroes are, and to design a stamp in their honour.

Year 7 Jayden said:

“I chose Marcus Rashford for my stamp design because he has been inspirational and helped to keep children fed.”

Fellow Year 7, Lex, said:

“For my design I chose all the people that made masks to help keep us all safe.”

The closing date is Friday 28th May. A special panel of judges will pick the winning designs. The final eight stamps will be sent to Her Majesty The Queen before they can be printed and issued. Good luck to all our stamp designers!

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, has seen the designs take shape over the term and said:

“The boys have really thought about who has inspired them during the pandemic through their work. It is lovely to see the boys acknowledging the work of others in such an innovative way.”
