Hospitality and Catering Takeover at The Reach

Industry Visit by Year 10 Students

On the 25th November, Wellacre’s Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students were welcomed by The Reach Hotel, Piccadilly, to provide an insight into the industry. 

Wellacre is part of the Hospitality Connect with Manchester Hoteliers Association, which links schools with local hospitality businesses, and we have a new partnership with The Reach. 

    

Students were invited to take part in an inspiring  hotel ‘takeover.’ Students were divided up to shadow job roles such as housekeeping, the back office, reception, food and beverage, the kitchen and maintenance.

The day was an excellent opportunity for students to see the inner workings of the hotel and learn about the diverse pathways in hospitality.

    

Mrs Ashburn, Teacher of Food, Cookery and Nutrition, said:

“The boys engaged brilliantly with the activities and talked to the staff from within the departments they were working in. Amari and Gabrielle were teamed up with the Executive Chef and made chocolate chip cookies, which were delicious. Dylan received a business card from an American guest, with a business in AI and hospitality - one for the future! Students were impressed to see two influencers too.”

Student feedback from the trip was really positive!

“I really enjoyed the trip to the hotel because the staff were welcoming, the food was nice and the activities showed us what it is like to work in a hotel.”

“I enjoyed learning about how to set a table correctly, and how to make coffee and other hot drinks. We learned how the hotel is maintained by housekeeping and the demands on the staff to keep the hotel running.  We learned more about the different careers, the qualifications and routes into the industry.”

“I enjoyed spending time with maintenance checking on water pipes and boiler, a car park under construction, vending machines and a new suite called The Rochdale.  I also had the opportunity to work in the kitchen and tried some foods including scallops and brownies.”
