GMI Construction Workplace Safari Gives Wellacre Students a Deeper Look Into the Industry

A group of Year 10 students from Wellacre recently took part in an inspiring Workplace Safari at the GMI Construction Head Office, delivered through the MBACC initiative. The visit offered students an in‑depth look at the construction sector, helping them understand the scale, variety and progression routes available within one of the UK’s most dynamic industries.

Throughout the day, students were welcomed by members of the GMI team, who shared their experiences and explained the diverse roles that keep a major construction company running. From project management and quantity surveying to architecture, engineering, health and safety, and site operations, students discovered how many different skills and interests can lead to a successful career in construction.

The group also explored the apprenticeship pathways available after leaving school. GMI staff outlined the practical benefits of apprenticeships, including earning while learning, gaining hands‑on experience, and building professional networks early. Students were particularly interested in the structured programmes GMI offers, which support young people as they transition from school into the workplace.

In addition to career insights, the visit showcased GMI’s commitment to nurturing future talent. Students learned about the company’s practical workshops, work experience placements, and industry‑led training opportunities, all designed to help young people develop confidence and real‑world skills. These initiatives gave students a clearer understanding of what employers look for and how they can begin preparing now for life after Year 11.
