Year 10 and 11 students visit construction sites

Year 10 and 11 construction classes were invited to visit sites run by Willmott Dixon, a leading independent construction and property services company.

Coordinated by Mr Seggie, Teacher of Technology, the visits included a tour of Willmott Dixon an autism centre and housing under construction for Wigan Council.

Mr Seggie said:

“These visits to the ‘real working world’ encourage our students to think about possible career paths and also exposes them to possible work experience opportunities.

As part of the construction course at Wellacre, these site visits enable students to see real construction projects in action.  They also allow students to see the scale of such projects, as well as take note of the variety of different trades and specialist professionals needed to complete the work.  In addition, these visits provide context to theory work undertaken in lessons.

Mr Seggie added:

“As well as the students gaining knowledge from these industry visits, it also provides a valuable chance for me, as a teacher, to upskill my expertise in new areas of construction and leading to in-depth class discussion of current industry examples.”

Following the tour, students shared their positive feedback about the experience:

Year 10, Ethan, said: “It gave us all a good understanding of the rules and safety regulations when working on a building site.”

Lucas, also Year 10, added:

“It was helpful for us to learn all about the building structures and different types of materials used.”
