Post 16 Open Events
Open Events, either day or evening visits, provide an excellent opportunity to tour the further education setting, as well as meet staff and current students too.
You will be able to speak to those who teach and work at the institute, understand how the courses work and clarify information you may have read in the prospectus or online. You will be able to find out about the balance of exams to coursework for assessments, student experiences of the course and college life in general, and be able to ask any personal questions you may have.
These visits are an opportunity to gain an authentic feel for the institution, a sense of the support on offer, extra curricular activities, as well as learn how they impact both the local and academic community.
Another benefit of Open Events is the presentations, regarding both your subject and community life. Many further education settings also organise talks for parents. The advantage of all these talks, is that they will explain to you how the course works and what it’s really like to be a student at that particular Post 16 institute.
If you are applying to the same course at different institutes, the subject talks can help to highlight the subtle differences between courses. It is a great idea to take notes in these talks as you can then look over them later and refresh your memory about the specifics of each course.
Open days can be quite hectic, so make sure to book online to reserve your place (if that’s necessary), plan your evening so that you’re able to do everything you want to.
