World Book Day 2024

Sharing a Love of Books and Reading

It was World Book Day (WBD) on the 7th March and Wellacre joined in the international celebration of books and reading with an array of inspiring activities and rewards! 

  

Wellacre staff got into the spirit of the day by adopting themes and dressing up as literary characters. Team English were GCSE literature characters, Team Admin brought The Midnight Gang to life and Team Science dressed as their favourite Harry Potter heroes and villains. Students were invited to guess the characters' names to win an achievement point!

To celebrate our students’ reading choices, everyone in Key Stage 3 completed a postcard naming the book they would most like to read and receive.  Principal, Mrs Sharrock, drew a number of lucky students out of a draw and they were all presented with their books on the day.

  

The English department all nominated Reading Champions for this half-term - these were students who have displayed an excellent attitude to learning and reading.  These students were gathered, alongside Wellacre’s Reading Intervention students, to receive their Bronze Book Badge and an invitation to the WBD Pizza Party! 

  

The Big Book Swap was a huge success. We were inspired by the impact of our 'Book Buzz' sharer scheme so encouraged staff and students to bring any old books to swap and share in the school library. One lucky Year 7 swapped his book for a signed Rio Ferdinand autobiography and another asked if we could do this every week - Mr Hedge has taken this fantastic feedback on board for the future.

Students were engaged throughout the day with staff sharing their love for reading both in form time and classes. To showcase a real range of literature suggestions, they read a short extract from a favourite book and displayed their book choice postcards on classroom or office doors. 

All KS3 students received a £1 WBD book voucher, which will allow them to pick up a free book from their local bookstore (redeemable until 31 March 2024.)

Mr Hedge, Assistant Leader of English, said:

“Students were really engaged with all of the exciting activities we had going on and it was an honour to celebrate the achievement of our Reading Champions and ambassadors. 

  

“It was brilliant to see the students share and swap books in the library and there was a wonderful atmosphere around school with students and staff chatting about a love of all things reading. The WBD costumes were superb and this contributed to the buzz for books around school - costumes definitely brought a smile to everyone’s faces.” 

Wellacre was also the recipient of 70 books for the library through a WBD donation scheme with Heart FM and these dropped off at reception this week. You might have heard the shout out live on the radio station on World Book Day last Thursday!
