Former Wellacre student Connor returns to teach

We were pleased to welcome back former Wellacre student Connor to undertake a work experience placement in the PE Department.

After achieving a fantastic set of GCSE results in August 2018, including a distinction in BTEC Sport and a grade 7 in History, Connor accepted a place at Loreto College.

Connor is studying BTEC Sport Level 3, A Level Psychology and A Level History.

As part of his BTEC Sport course, there was a requirement to complete a 3 day placement shadowing a professional in their field.

Connor said:

“I want to become a PE teacher, so returning to Wellacre is a really good experience to have behind me; I’ve gained an insight into teaching and it was a good opportunity to work with students.”

As part of the placement, Connor was required to take on a number of the responsibilities of the professional he was shadowing.  He has been in lessons with students from Years 7 to 10, both observing and taking part, for example, leading a warm-up, organising a physical activity.

He added:

“It’s been an eye opener to be back at school but on the teaching side!  I really want to come back for another placement in July, for a week or more, as I plan to go to university to study Secondary Education and it will be good to gain even more experience.”

Mr Duffy, Teacher of PE and Year 11 Progress Leader, has been mentoring Connor during his placement, and said:

“It is always a pleasure to welcome past students back to Wellacre and support them whilst they gain valuable experiences in teaching. Connor took every opportunity to develop his pedagogy during his work experience here and I look forward to his return in July so he can continue to grow into a confident and knowledgeable teaching practitioner before embarking on his University degree”.
