World Book Day 2025

On 6th March 2025, Wellacre students and staff enthusiastically participated in a number of events to recognise and celebrate reading. 

Leader of English Mr Hedge, hosted a ‘Big Book swap’ during break time with over 200 students swapping books and book reviews. Noah (Year 10) selected a huge anthology of famous events in the history of Manchester United and he was very happy with his chosen book. For the second year running, Matthew (Year 8) took the opportunity to swap his book for a fresh one. Unfortunately, he could not find a signed copy of an autobiography this time; hopefully next year! 

A Pizza Party was held during lunch time to celebrate the hard work and effort of KS3 students nominated by their English teacher as a ‘reading champion’. 

In addition, they were joined by a group of Year 10 students who have led weekly reading interventions at Acre Hall primary school. Their contribution to the wider community is much appreciated; well done! 

Mr Hedge commended the efforts of staff to dress up as a literary character, commenting: ‘The collective efforts from staff to represent literary characters on World Book Day was fantastic. It was brilliant to see that our staff recognised the importance of engaging students in conversations about literature and literary characters. It was great to share a range of literary experiences with our students, who were rewarded with achievement points for their efforts in guessing the correct characters!’

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, added:

‘World Book Day was a huge success. I was interested to read the varied book choices of students and staff on the book request postcards. It was a pleasure to be able to gift books to many of them as a celebration of our commitment to reading.’
