Boxer Courtney Fry returns to Wellacre

We were excited to welcome back Olympic and Commonwealth boxer Courtney Fry as part of the Mentally Healthy Schools programme.

Courtney was joined by 42nd Street counsellors to hold a second workshop focusing, again, on students’ health and wellbeing.

Students participated in several activities, which helped them focus and reflect on their own habits, and whether they had made changes for improvement since the last session with Courtney.

They then used what they had learnt and adapted these basic concepts to help improve theirs (and others) mental wellbeing by creating an ‘Ideal Island’.  They identified all the areas of Wellacre which positively impacts students’ health and wellbeing, such as friends, staff and pastoral support, and areas for development, such as, ‘chill-out’ rooms and more activity clubs.

Principal Miss Wicks said:

“It is clear that the Mentally Healthy Schools Programme has had a positive impact on the individual students involved.  We’re also pleased that they have used their knowledge to make recommendations to develop the environment and to support their peers.”

The feedback from the group was extremely positive and showed students’ greater understanding of the importance of a healthy mind and body:

"I didn't realise the food I ate made such a difference to my mental health"

"I will rethink how long I spend gaming and how many sugary drinks I drink during the day"

"I will try to help others struggling with their mental health"
