Students Enjoy Construction Site Visit

Year 10 and 11 Constructing the Built Environment students had the opportunity to visit a real time construction project at Altrincham Leisure Centre. 

The site visit is the first of two, hosted by the Kier Group, a British construction, services and property group active in building and civil engineering. The second site visit will take place later in Spring 2024 so that students can see how the project has progressed.

At the visit, Kevin Mullin, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, and Jason Bamford, Project Manager, welcomed students and discussed the renovation plans which are underway. 

They also talked about Careers in Construction, the various job roles at Kier and the pathway opportunities in the sector including degree apprenticeships. 

Students then donned hard hats and safety clothing before taking a detailed tour of the site. 

Mrs Bentley, Leader of Design Technology, Art and Food, said:

“Students were able to connect their learning in the classroom with this experience.  The authentic learning environment allowed them to link their knowledge and understanding within the construction sector.”

Students found on-site the experience worthwhile; feedback included:

“We learnt about the importance of carbon reduction and why renovation of buildings is better for the environment, at times, than knocking a structure down and constructing a new build.” 

“I learnt about career pathways and the benefits of completing a degree apprenticeship.”
