Wellacre’s Sport Leaders Attend Conference

A team of Wellacre’s Year 8 and 9 Sport Leaders recently attended the Trafford Leadership Academy Launch Event, co-ordinated by the Trafford Sports Partnership.

Hugh and Jayden, Year 8, alongside Harry, Year 9, joined students from Flixton Girls, Blessed Thomas Holdford, and Ashton-on-Mersey to learn more about the Leadership Academy and the aims of the scheme.

The Trafford Leadership Academy will empower our Sport Leaders to plan various projects using the power of Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 to inspire young people to be more active.

The conference covered the role of Sport Leaders, the commitment required and the expectations of them.  They then moved on their first brief for a roadshow, looking at the Commonwealth Games, the sports to be included in Birmingham 2022 and the values of humanity, destiny, and equality.

The brief asks Wellacre’s Sport Leaders to plan and deliver a safe, enjoyable and inclusive roadshow.  They will coordinate their own checklist and budget for the event, and must consider how they can make their event extra special with the allocated budget of £200.

At school, the Sport Leader representatives are now working with the wider team to plan a successful event before returning to present a Dragon’s Den pitch to the Trafford Leadership committee.  They are working alongside Wellacre’s Director of Transition, Mr Thomson, on an idea to involve local primary schools.

Mr Whitehead, Teacher of PE, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their budding leadership skills and qualities, they have got some inspiring ideas to engage younger pupils in sport at an exciting Primary Commonwealth Roadshow.”

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, added:

“Our Sports Leaders have excelled this year and provided great support to a number of Primary events in Trafford. This project will give them the opportunity to put their leadership skills to the test in the planning and delivery of a bespoke event to a specific brief and within a budget. I look forward to seeing their plans come to fruition.”
