More Karate Medals for Year 10 Student

Wellacre’s very own karate kid, Year 10 Jamie, has achieved medal success in the UK GKR National Karate Championship on 16th November, in Sheffield.

Jamie qualified in the regional heat in October with a series of gold medals.  As he is a black belt, Jamie now competes in the Junior Male Open division (age 14-17), which is a new challenge.

In the UK Championships, Jamie competed in three rounds of Kata (moves and patterns) and three rounds of Team Kata to win a Bronze medal and trophy for Individual Kata and a Silver medal for the Team Kata.

He also competed in one round of Individual Kumite, which was highly competitive as Jamie was pitted against the World Champion, age 17!

Reflecting on the challenge of the competition, Jamie said:

“Competition was fierce; the GKR Manager compared it to moving from Year 6 to Year 7 in secondary, and competing against Year 11s.

“I was really nervous to compete against this age group for the first time in a National competition, but I was really, really pleased about how well I did, coming home with medals and a trophy!”
