We are pleased to report that new learning resources have been published by Historic England, following a Historic England and Heritage Schools project in school.

Leader of Humanities and SMSC, Mrs O’Neill, has created a Manchester Caribbean Carnival scheme of learning and resources utilising the research of historian Dr Jessica White.

They have been published by Historic England here.

These resources and scheme of learning will now be available for other schools to use

This is just one example of how Wellace has worked with Historic England to incorporate local history into our curriculum.  We were selected by Historic England to be part of an evaluation of their work with schools. Year 9 and 10 History students joined Mrs O'Neill in providing feedback on their work with Historic England. They focused on the work in lessons on local history such as Irlam Locks and the Manchester Caribbean Carnival. They spoke confidently and enthusiastically about the impact on their sense of community.

Mrs O’Neill, said:

“We are looking forward to receiving our new Heritage Schools Award plaque, which recognised the significant work Wellacre has done in promoting local history.

“As well as embedded local history into our curriculum, we also share our work with local primary schools through workshops. Acre Hall Primary School visited recently to learn more about Irlam Locks and WW1 links in Flixon.”

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, added:

“This is a fantastic project and has been well received by our local primary schools.  Thank you to Mrs O’Neill for her considerable work on this project over many months.”
