Science Week Takeover at Manchester Museum

Year 10 Explore STEM Careers

As part of Wellacre’s Careers Month, Year 10 Triple Science students visited the British Science Week Takeover at Manchester Museum.

The event, on 11th March, was an exciting opportunity for students to experience the wide variety of pathways and areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.)

The museum came to life so that secondary school visitors could find out more about cutting edge research from University of Manchester researchers.  They had taken over the museum's three floors of Nature's Library, Living Worlds and Fossils, to share their research and engage students in their interactive activities.

The museum was closed to the public so that everyone could browse the museum galleries and explore all the University of Manchester exhibitions.

Exhibitors included the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, Graphene@Manchester and the Department of Materials.  From viruses and robots to fossils and lasers, there was something to spark all interests.

Students also had the opportunity to visit the University of Manchester campus for a taste of undergraduate life. 

Year 10 Ben said:

“I had the opportunity to isolate graphene and look at it in close detail under a microscope!”

Principal Mrs Sharrock said: 

“This was a fantastic opportunity for our Science scholars to explore the museum and widen their appreciation of STEM pathways.”
