Wellacre joins cycling, walking and scooting challenge

Wellacre invited students and staff to join in The Big Pedal 2021 from 19th to 30th April – the UK’s largest cycling, walking and scooting challenge for schools.

Following on from Wellacre’s success in The Big Pedal 2019, we aimed to match our miles by encouraging students and staff to travel by bike, foot or scooter for their journey to and from school.

During the challenge, 2,253 participating primary and secondary schools competed with one another to make the most journeys by bike, foot or scooter.

Wellacre students logged all their journeys with their tutor alongside over 758,537 students making more than 3 million journeys all over the UK.

At the end of the challenge we established that 47% of Wellacre students cycled or walked to school.  And with one last pedal push over the finishing line, Wellacre claimed a spot on the podium by coming 3rd in Greater Manchester and 27th in the UK.

To coincide with The Big Pedal, Wellacre staff also dusted off their bikes to travel to school and organised a staff cycle to Chat Moss after school with a further event planned for June.

Organiser and Teacher of Maths, Mrs Eagling, said:

“We celebrated Earth Day during The Big Pedal, and it was fantastic to see so many Wellacre students embracing the challenge and understanding the impact of walking or cycling to school, both on their own health and wellbeing, as well as the environment.”
