A group of Year 7 and 8 students have embarked on The Scholars’ programme with The Brilliant Club, which will see them work alongside a PhD tutor to help them develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to secure a place at university in the future.

The programme is available to state schools and is structured around seven tutorials as well as two trips to the most competitive universities to speak with current undergraduates and learn about university life.

The students will work towards completing a challenging final assignment which is marked and moderated using university grades.

Year 7 Oliver said:

“We’re going to be answering the question ‘What does peace mean to you?” I’m looking forward to talking about world peace and how that could come to fruition.

Being part of The Brilliant Club might help me get into college or university, and with great job opportunities in the future.”

At the launch, students were introduced to the course subject ‘Gender and Peace.’  The course will teach students how understandings of peace, international law, armed conflict, feminism and gender all interlink.  Students who complete this course will have a greater understanding of how international law functions, what gender analysis is, and how activism works. This course will also help students be critical about contemporary issues and help them communicate their ideas in writing and through our weekly discussion.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal said:

“The students are excited to embrace the challenges posed by the The Scholars’ Project and are eager to get going! They will be well supported by their PhD Tutor and Mrs Potter in school. I am looking forward to reading their final assignments at the end of the programme.”
