Student Leadership

There are many leadership opportunities for students at Wellacre. 

 

Executive Council Structure

Every Tutor Group at Wellacre has a representative to take ideas from the class to House Council meetings. House Council representatives (selected annually on application to Head of House) hold the meeting, and subsequently bring collective and agreed priorities to the Executive Council half-termly meeting, attended by the Principal and the Business Manager. Recent council suggestions that have been implemented include additional water fountains and a daily Year 8 Lego Club. The Executive Council is led by our Year 11 Senior Prefect team, who are elected by the student and staff body and who give feedback to the Principal regularly about issues affecting students at Wellacre, and represent the school as ambassadors.

Sports Ambassadors

The opportunity to lead, officiate and motivate primary students across Trafford by delivering competitions and festivals. This helps you develop confidence, leadership and communication skills amongst many others. Open to Year 8 and Year 9. In addition, each House has a designated Sports Captain who is part of the Executive Council and assists with regular House sporting competitions.

Student Leaders

The opportunity to be the front face of Wellacre for a day, supporting in the Main Reception Building. This is offered to all year 8 and Year 9 students at least once per academic year.

Wellacre Buddies

Wellacre Buddies are trained representatives who champion our Anti-Bullying ethos, and make themselves available at social times in The Hub and at our designated 'Buddy Bench'. They are available to offer informal peer support to those who seek it, and take a key role in events such as Anti-Bullying week.

Environmental/Eco Ambassadors

Pupils interested in the environment and sustainability have the opportunity to attend Gardening Club or our Eco Centre offer as part of the Co-Curricular Programme. Students participating in these activities go on to represent Wellacre's entry at the RHS Tatton Show.

STEM Ambassadors

Participation in STEM challenges competing against other schools and helping organise and run science week for our school and for local primary schools. STEM Ambassadors help build up knowledge and links between classroom activities and careers in STEM.

Community Ambassadors

Weekly, as part of our Co-Curricular Programme, students attend De Brook Lodge care home and Delamere Special School. At De Brook, students play games and provide companionship to residents, building relationships over time. At Delemere, students work closely with primary age students with profound special needs.

Combined Cadet Force

Our aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Each CCF is an educational partnership between the school and the Ministry of Defence. Our CCF at Wellacre is the Royal Navy section.

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) develops key life skills in young people (from Year 9) including confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Participants build physical fitness, learn new skills, volunteer in their community, and complete adventurous expeditions. It is highly regarded by employers and universities for building leadership, commitment, and self-belief.

Digital Leaders

The Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award, known as iDEA, is an international award winning programme that helps develop digital, enterprise and employability skills for free. Through a series of online challenges, pupils can win career-enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities and, ultimately, gain industry-recognised Awards that help you stand out from the crowd.

Youth Travel Ambassadors

Provides young people with the skills and confidence to address transport issues in their local area. A team of students will research and develop campaigns with the focus on encouraging more active travel amongst their peers. Funding to deliver their campaign is secured at an interschool "Dragon's Den" style pitch event where each school is awarded a grant of up to £500.

Bite Back

Biteback is a youth initiative we are proud to be part of, comprising 12,000 students across 200 schools nationwide. The programme empowers students with knowledge about healthy, nutritious food, teaches them how to read food labels, and helps them understand the impact of food choices on their health and well-being. Within our school, students lead initiatives to improve food accessibility, encourage healthier choices, and educate peers about the connection between nutrition and mental health. A key focus of Biteback is ensuring that all students have access to healthy, nutritious meals throughout the school day.

Students who join our Biteback team build on the foundational knowledge they gain during the Respect programme in the Spring term, where they explore ways to improve food choices both at school and at home.

Reading Mentors

We have both peer reading mentors, where KS4 pupils support KS3 fluent readers with additional reading support during specified tutor time sessions, and outreach mentors, where support is provided for KS2 readers in a local Primary school by Wellacre pupils.

CoachBright Programme (Maths)

Gives selected Year 10 pupils the chance to support a younger pupil to: Grow in confidence, independence and belief in their maths skills; develop their own leadership, communication and teamwork skills; earn a nationally recognised SSAT Student Leadership Award.
