CCF cadets enjoyed a full day of challenge, teamwork and new experiences during their field day at Waterside Lodge, Southport, where they took part in a large‑scale disaster relief exercise before heading out onto the water for powerboat training.

As part of the morning mission, cadets were tasked with responding to a simulated shipwreck. Working in teams, they had to decide the best plan of action to support survivors, demonstrating leadership, communication and problem‑solving under pressure.

Their tasks included:

  • Building a children’s play area - creating a safe, supportive space for young survivors.

  • Constructing a communication tower - ensuring rescue teams could stay connected and coordinate effectively.

The scenario pushed students to think creatively and act decisively, mirroring the real‑world demands of humanitarian response.

In the afternoon, cadets had the rare opportunity to get behind the controls of three different powerboats:

  • Rigiflex

  • RIB

  • Cabin boat

With winds too strong for sailing, the switch to powerboats gave students a unique and exciting alternative. For many, it was their first time driving a speedboat - an experience that left a strong impression.

Mark M said “It was really fun being able to drive a speedboat. I want to now go on a powerboat course.”

Staff praised the cadets for embracing the challenge, noting how valuable it was for them to learn a completely new skill in a safe, supervised environment.

The combination of hands‑on problem‑solving, teamwork, and practical water‑based skills made this field day one to remember. Cadets left with increased confidence, new experiences and a deeper understanding of what it means to respond to real‑life emergencies.
