Afloat Training for Wellacre’s CCF Unit

Wellacre’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Unit travelled to Southport Watersports Club on 6th November to complete Afloat Training, accompanied by SSM Ward and Slt Duffy.

The CCF’s Scheme of Work syllabus includes learning sailing skills, so Wellacre students visited the watersports club to learn how to sail a small boat called a dinghy.

The day began with an introduction to the dinghy and the essential controls delivered by Chief Petty Officer, David Urie, who is a serving member of the Royal Navy.  Basic instructions included steering by handling the sail and the foils (centreboard), and side-to-side balance.

Working in pairs, students took to the water and put their learning into practice!

Squadron Sergeant Major (SSM) and Assistant Head of House, Mr Ward, said:

“By completing the afloat training, the cadets enjoyed a valuable experience, and boosted their confidence, in the water. They showed exceptional teamwork, learning a brand new skill and taking control of the dinghy.”

CCF cadet, Josh, said:

“At first, we struggled with trying to steer the dinghy but once we got used to the controls and the wind caught the sail, we were off!  It was a buzz!”

Well done to Josh, Max, Daniel, Christen, Ryan, Joe and Alex.
