Wellacre Joins Garden Design Competition

Wellacre students have taken the opportunity to join the Schools’ Allotment at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park in July 2022.

Schools and youth groups in the North have been offered the chance to design and build an allotment plot to create a large exhibition area for Flower Show visitors to walk through.

As part of a P6 Co-Curricular group based at Wellacre’s Eco Centre, students have been asked to interpret the theme ‘Garden of Resilience’ by creating an allotment garden, which must incorporate and focus on environmental and wildlife friendly gardening.

The RHS have said gardens can be as creative as possible, they could include living walls using plants that are edible for both humans and birds, or explore fruiting trees and how planting these play a part in environmentally aware gardening. The possibilities are endless!

Mr Toogood, Leader of Science, said:

“As part of the competition, we have been asked to grow at least 50% of plants we use from seeds and they should be looked after by our students so we will be working in the Eco Centre throughout the project as we develop our garden’s design and elements.”

“This will be a fantastic opportunity for students to develop an understanding and interest in creative and colourful horticulture and growing, as well as environmentally friendly gardening and gardening for native wildlife.”

Students have started the project by working in teams to research ideas. Year 9 team Fred, Ryan, Tom and Jayden said:

“We’re looking at what a ‘garden of resilience’ could contain to represent the theme, such as a backdrop, flowers, a pathway or sculptures.”

Wellacre students will attend an online workshop with a RHS Flower Show Coordinator to run through the brief and theme, plant health, as well as advice and tips on how to get the most out of the experience.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, added:

"Wellacre has a long association with the RHS Flower Show and we're really excited to be exhibiting again this year.  Our Eco Centre and our Co-Curricular provision are useful assets in realising the students' ambitions for their 'Garden of Resilience'."
