Making a Difference at Christmas

Wellacre Academy students and staff have generously donated hundreds of food items and toiletries this year as part of a Reverse Advent campaign for the Stretford Foodbank.

The annual Reverse Advent event, held in December, invites the school community to donate items to a nominated charity.

This year, Wellacre selected the Stretford Foodbank to help make sure no-one in the community goes hungry this winter.  It is predicted that there will be a 61% rise in the number of families using the foodbank due to the impact of Covid-19.

Wellacre’s Achievement Tutors launched the appeal with students and raised awareness of the impact and difference community support can make to those in need.

Students and staff collected a wide variety of dried and canned goods and toiletries from long-life milk to toothbrushes.

Due to the generosity of the community, Stretford Foodbank have enough stock to supply families with food and toiletries for Christmas.   Wellacre’s donations will be delivered after Christmas to help those in need in the New Year.

Organiser and Head of House, Mrs Irwin, said:

“Our brilliant collection will be delivered to Stretford Foodbank in January when demand is at the highest point.  I want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to everyone who has donated, the support from staff, students and their families has been tremendous.”

As part of Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 18th December, we have extended the invitation to students to either bring in more items for the foodbank or a £1 donation to Save the Children.
