Year 7 and 8 Students Graduate at University of Leeds

Wellacre celebrated the success of our Year 7 and 8 students as they graduated from The Scholars Programme, at a ceremony held at the University of Leeds on 15th May.

Year 7 students Joshua, Samuel, Ethan, Mackenzie, Jack, Solomon and Finnley, alongside Year 8 George, Dylan, Noah, Luke, Charlie, Alfie, and Zach, travelled to Leeds for a taste of university celebration at their very own graduation ceremony to recognise their success as part of the Brilliant Club.

After arriving, they all enjoyed a tour of the university and met university students before attending the graduation.

Zach, Year 8, was invited to address the graduation audience about his Brilliant Club experience.  He said:

“Brilliant Club ended up being so much more to me; I learned skills that I will use later in life and knowledge that will help me, and it gave me an insight into the level of work, effort and commitment you need at university. I’d like to thank all those people who were involved in giving me this opportunity and, I’d also like to say, if you ever get the opportunity to do the Brilliant Club, please do it!”

Our scholars have risen to the challenge of the university programme, attending tutorials on the introduction to literary theory over the Spring term with a subject expert PhD tutor, Hannah Brumby, and assisted by Mrs Barnes, Teacher of English.  They were encouraged to think and work independently to complete a challenging final essay which was given a university-level grade.

All our young students performed exceptionally well and we were especially impressed with Year 7’s Jack, Mackenzie and Finnley, as well as Year 8’s Luke and Zach who scored top marks and each achieved a 1st!

PhD Tutor Hannah Brumby shared some amazing feedback on our students’ work. She said:

“The Scholars have made some great progress over the course of our tutorials, and I’ve really enjoyed their contributions to each class. Students made some really insightful points about each of the literary theories we’ve studied; I’m hoping this will broaden their understanding of literature from now on. Well done!”

Mrs Barnes, Teacher of English, added:

“All our students should be extremely proud of everything they have achieved whilst being a part of Brilliant Club!”

Principal Mrs Sharrock, also said:

“Congratulations to all our amazing graduates.  They excelled with what was challenging content and experienced a real sense of satisfaction with their considerable achievement. Thanks to Hannah and also Mrs Barnes and Mr Lewis for their support.”
