Wellacre’s Icelandic Adventure 2024

Students Discover South West Iceland

Wellacre embarked on a five-day adventure to Iceland on 26th October to explore the sites in the South West of the country. 

After arriving safely in Iceland, the group of 60 students accompanied by Mr Baker, Mr Caslake, Miss Quigley, Mr Sharrock, Miss Morley and Mr Linnie, travelled to the Bridge between Continents’ and Gunnuhver.

    

The symbolic footbridge spans a fissure between Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and students had the opportunity to witness the effects of continental drift. 

Next they took a walk amongst mud pools and steam vents, and viewed the vigorously bubbling Gunnuhver, Iceland’s largest mud pool with a diameter of 20m!

On day two, the tour continued with a walk around Reykjadalur, a geothermally active valley, followed by a visit to Kerio,a dramatic volcanic crater lake.  Everyone then visited Skyrland for skyr tasting, a Viking dairy product. 

    

Day three began with an early start, with a visit to the LAVA Centre in Hvollsvollur to learn about the volcanic forces at work in the country. The day continued with a sightseeing tour of the Solheimajokull ‘sun house glacier’, the Reynisfjara volcanic beach, the Dyrolaey 120m high natural rock arch and the Skogafoss waterfalls. 

    

The final day included a trip to the Gullfoss magnificent waterfalls, The Pingvellir National Park and the Geysir hot spring. Everyone enjoyed watching the huge geysir erupt a few times as well as taking a dip in the Secret Lagoon.

The final treat was the Lava Show, which included sea kayaking in the Bay of Kotor to experience flowing rock and feel the heat of molten lava!

“The visit to Iceland was absolutely awe-inspiring and students relished all the opportunities the trip offered. They were inspired and amazed every day, and both staff and students went home with lifelong memories made.”
