Wellacre Supports Anti-Bullying Week

During the week of 16th to 20th November, Wellacre supported the national Anti-Bullying Week with the appointment of a new team of ‘buddies’ and a range of activities to promote the theme ‘United Against Bullying’.

Students from Years 8 to 10 were invited to become ‘buddies,’ with the opportunity to become Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Peer Mentors and Wellbeing Ambassadors.

Over 40 students applied to take on the responsibility and a training programme, delivered by The Diana Award, began with a group of  Year 9 students.

Mr Dougherty, Assistant Head of House, said:

“At Wellacre, our team of buddies have an important role in promoting our core values and helping to foster a kind, safe environment at school.

“We are so proud that so many students stepped forward to grow the team and stand together to support each other and their peers.  The training will really help to grow their confidence in their abilities as Anti-bullying Ambassadors.”

The training, which took place via video conference, covered various forms of bullying such as the online and offline issues faced by young people.   They learnt how to tackle bullying behaviour, and share their knowledge and how to support their peers.

Year 9 student, Luke, said:

“I thought I would make a good Anti-bullying Ambassador as I think people know me as a CCF cadet and would feel comfortable coming to me for help.  I learnt a lot today about different types of bullying, how to talk to people and be there for them.”

During Anti-Bullying Week, Wellacre staff and students also took part in Odd Sock Day and were invited to wear odd socks and celebrate what makes us all unique!  Tutor groups also discussed lessons from the Anti-Bullying Alliance, as well as participating in a themed House crossword and poetry competition.  Thanks to everyone for their support during Anti-Bullying Week 2020.
