Both Ben and Jayden, Year 8, addressed the graduation audience about their Brilliant Club experience and shared their favourite section from their final assignments.

Ben, Year 8, commented:

“The best thing about The Scholars Programme was that the subject I was learning was different to me and made me think about many other things I would never have thought about. This greatly expanded my knowledge about the world and has helped me see things in a new light.”

Fellow Year 8, Jayden, added:

“During the course my PhD tutor, Ola, was very kind and broke things down for us to help us understand things that we may have never known before. Thank you to Ola for supporting me and my friends throughout this course.”

Students were encouraged to think and work independently across seven tutorials with a subject expert PhD researcher, Dr Ola Abdelaal. During the programme, they learnt about “Gender and Peace” and then completed a challenging final essay which was given a university-level grade.

The Scholars Programme, run by UK-wide university access charity The Brilliant Club, supports students aged 8-18 to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to progress to university and succeed once there.

The Scholars Programme has enabled students at Wellacre to learn beyond the core curriculum and helped them to develop key skills for university and later in life, such as critical thinking.

Susie Whigham, Interim CEO at The Brilliant Club, congratulated the pupils on their achievements:

“Congratulations to these outstanding students as they graduate from The Scholars Programme. They join a community of over 90,000 young people who have taken part in The Brilliant Club since 2011.

“Completing their final assignments was no doubt challenging, but it has shown that these students have a passion for learning and the knowledge to produce university-style work already. I hope they use these new skills throughout their education and continue their fantastic work.”

Principal Mrs Sharrock, added:

“Huge congratulations to all our ‘graduates’ this year.  They have really impressed with their curiosity, independent learning and hard work.  We are very proud of them."
