Inspiring STEM Careers at Primary Day

Inspiring STEM Careers at Primary Day
On 28th September, Wellacre and Flixton Girls (FGS) hosted an inspiring Primary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Day.
Over 400 Year 6 pupils from primary schools including St Mary's, St Michael’s, Acre Hall, Flixton Primary, Urmston Juniors, Victoria Park, Moss Park, Kingsway and Highfield joined the event.
The aspirational event challenged the boys, who travelled from across Trafford to participate, to dress up as any professional figure or career in the STEM industry and learn more about future opportunities in this field.
Wellacre welcomed astronauts, surgeons, builders, pilots and zoologists and many more; every pupil enjoyed a host of engaging and exciting lessons and activities throughout the day in range of subject areas, to learn more about STEM careers.
Activities included, for example, in Maths, taking on the role of a farmer and using pupils’ knowledge of area and perimeter, designing a profitable farm, and in History, learning about the Black Death and how doctors in the Middle Ages treated the disease, as well as looking at how the disease itself is tested in laboratories today for research.
Principal Miss Wicks said:
“Our annual Primary Day gets better and better each year! Our goal was to show these pupils the vast STEM careers opportunities available to them and show them that anything is possible - it was amazing to see these young boys aiming high.”
“We open Wellacre to pupils for our Primary Day as part of our extensive transition programme. We hope to build their confidence and settle worries ahead of the transition process, when they move from primary school to secondary.”
One Flixton Primary pupil said: “It was a great day, I've learnt so much and had a really great time.”
Participating schools posted positive feedback on social media:
Moss Park primary school said: “Thanks for a fantastic STEM day for Year 6. We had doctors, engineers, vets, accountants, builders, coders and more!”
Acre Hall primary school said: “Thank you to everyone at Wellacre for the Year 6 STEM day. Our boys enjoyed the experience so much.”
