Duke of Edinburgh Students Brave the Bronze

Wellacre Students Embark on Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

On 28th June, Wellacre students embarked on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) expedition to Rivington, Bolton.

  

The Bronze D of E Assessment was a two day expedition with an overnight stay and all the brave students completed the hiking and camping trip successfully.

The assessment followed the weekend practice expedition in May, which took place at Dunham Scout Camp in Altrincham.

  

The staff that coordinated the D of E were Mr Asha, Teacher of Science, Mr Baker, Leader of Geography, and SLT Ward, and they were on hand to deliver the necessary training to ensure the students succeeded in the ‘wilderness’.

SSI Ward said:

“The boys have been working very hard to prepare for the expedition with a good amount of training and preparation. The D of E really pushes students out of their comfort zone and helps them to improve valuable skills, which they can use to boost their chances of success in the future.”

Congratulations to Joe R, George B, Luke O and James T, Year 9, Kanishk S, and Year 10, Aiden H and Zane W, Year 11.

  

There are many key assets necessary to successfully complete the Duke of Edinburgh including leadership, communication, first aid, cooking and determination. Throughout the expedition students also developed their navigation skills utilising a compass and map, problem solving, teamwork and understanding of the required equipment.

Luke, Year 9, said

“This was better than the practice we did due to the environment - we ventured out on the moors instead of sticking to country lines like in the practice.” 

The full D of E award consists of four key sections -  volunteering, skills, physical and an expedition. Once the expedition is complete, students will  move on to the next set of units. They’ll undertake voluntary work in the nearby community and around school. As well as completing physical activities and learning a new skill.

Founded on the 1st of September 1956, the Duke of Edinburgh award helps develop the youth and shapes them into gaining valuable skills for life and work; it is valued by employers. The programme aims to have a positive impact on behaviour, skills and future endeavours.
