Wellacre is registered with The Book Trust’s Book Buzz scheme, is a reading programme that aims to help schools inspire a love of reading in 11 to 13 year olds.

As a participating school, Wellacre was able to give every Year 7 student the opportunity to choose their own book to take home and keep from a list of 17 titles.  Each book is carefully selected by a panel of experts to ensure quality, suitability and to encourage reading for pleasure.

Mrs Stirling, Teacher of English and Whole School Literacy Coordinator, said:

"It is fantastic to see students eagerly anticipating the arrival of their new books and to be so enthusiastic about reading. It has been a challenge with limited library access this year, but through Book Buzz, our Year 7 students can access a great choice of exciting book titles.”

In lessons, classes spent time discussing the books and students chose accordingly.   Gifting the books in lesson created a ‘Book Buzz’ and many students began planning who they are going to swap books with once they have finished!

The most popular book choices for students were 'Crater Lake' by Jennifer Killick and 'The Haven' by Simon Lelic.

Year 7 Carlos said:

“It was great to get a free book from school, all the choices were good but I picked ‘Crater Lake’ because it looked the most interesting.  I’ve read a few pages and it’s really good so far!”

Mrs Potter, Teacher of English, added:

"My students were really excited to start reading their books and have already spent time discussing and comparing their reads. It was lovely to see them so engaged in their reading."
