Pupils from St. Monica’s, Gorse Hill and Acre Hall primary schools gathered on Wellacre’s school field for an afternoon of sport inspired by the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

In teams, pupils competed in shot-put, javelin, tag rugby, hockey and tennis skills, all planned, coordinated and led by Wellacre’s Sport Ambassadors.

The Sport Ambassadors have been part of a YST programme, undergoing training and mentoring to plan a roadshow using the power of Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 to inspire young people to be more active.  Their idea was given the green light at a Dragon’s Den pitch by the YST Trafford Leadership committee and the team were ready to deliver their event.

Mr Whitehead said:

“I’m really proud of our Sport Ambassadors; they planned and delivered a safe, enjoyable and inclusive roadshow; and made sure pupils were engaged and having lots of fun!.”

“As well as delivering a themed sporting event, they have also showcased fantastic leadership qualities and were enthusiastic in engaging and encouraging our young competitors.”

The ambassadors worked alongside Wellacre’s Director of Transition, Mr Thomson, to involve local primary schools. Everyone received a certificate and medal for their sporting efforts on the day.

The Youth Sport Trust commented:

“Well done to everyone who came to the Commonwealth Games roadshow today. Some great skills on show and amazing leaders from Wellacre.”
