Wellacre takes classroom outside!

Wellacre hosted a series of Eco Days for local primary schools as part of it’s primary liaison programme in the summer term.

Our Science department welcomed Years 4 and 5 from both Flixton Primary and St Hugh of Lincoln primary schools for an exciting day of activities in Wellacre’s on-site Eco Centre.

The school children looked high and low, through the grass, under logs and in the pond for an exciting nature hunt!

Armed with classification sheets and Eco Warrior equipment such as magnifying glasses, bug pots and nets, the children explored the specially crafted bug hotels as well as sweeping through the trees, grass and water to identify leaves, flowers and wildlife.

Mr Asha, Teacher of Science, also gave the children a full tour of Wellacre’s Eco Centre with the children learning about adaptations for different climates in the Eco Pods, which house an amazing collection of plant life including olive trees and orange trees.  They also measured biodiversity in the pond, and met Wellacre’s resident chickens and bees.

Mr Asha said:

“The day was a huge success with the children engaging in a variety of activities to support their learning in lessons.  The benefit of an outdoor ‘classroom’ is that it encourages hands on learning with exciting examples of food webs, tropical and desert plants and how we use living resources.  The girls were very upset that they can’t come to join us in Year 7!”
