Greetings from across the World

On Wednesday 26th September, Wellacre celebrated the annual European Day of Languages.

Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department organised a themed day to celebrate the languages spoken worldwide.

Staff set the theme of the day with a variety of greetings and phrases in lessons from all over the world including ‘Hallo’, ‘Konichiwa’, ‘Privyet’, ‘Dag’, ‘Ola’, ‘Ciao’ and ‘Hej’!

In the canteen, students were asked to use their French and Spanish communications skills when ordering from the specially prepared menus offering a selection from les boites de la salade to chilli vegetariano con judais.

Finally in DEAR time, tutor groups discussed the many positives of learning foreign languages from improving employability to developing overall reading skills, before taking part in a fun quiz!

Miss Bailey, Leader of MFL, said:

“We want to foster an appreciation not only of other languages but of other cultures through our work with students.  By celebrating the European Day of Languages, we want to show students that we live in a multilingual and multicultural world; fluency is not key but an understanding of a variety of languages will improve their communication, employability and empathy for others. Merci and gracias to all for the enthusiasm for this special day!”

At Wellacre, we encourage students to learn and appreciate other languages with French and Spanish as part of the core curriculum, Japanese and Beginners Spanish in our co-curricular programme on Wednesdays and other international projects including the Spanish Exchange, the Austrian ski trip and the South African ‘AfriTwin’.
