National Citizen Service

A Youth Programme Like No Other

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a summer programme for young people aged 15-17. We are offering this exciting opportunity for your son at Wellacre, which is recognised by universities and employers across the UK.

By taking part in NCS your son will benefit from having the opportunity to try new activities, gain life skills living independently and make their own independent project. NCS is broken down into three different phases:

Week 1 – Be Epic

This residential will provide a wide range of activities which are challenging, fun, build confidence and encourage team work. The residential will be 4 nights and 5 days, Monday to Friday. The group will experience outdoor challenges such as rock climbing, canoeing, rafting and gorge scrambling.

Week 2 – Live Life

This residential will provide an insight into community by working with local businesses and organisation. The week consists of 5 days, Monday to Friday, staying overnight at university halls of residence and other similar venues in Manchester. During this part of NCS, teams develop and strengthen through participating in projects which support their community. They also prepare for planning a social action project.

Phase 3 – Do Good

The young people  will meet each day for a week to plan a project to benefit the local community. As a team, the young people will agree on a project that is of interest to them, for example helping at an animal shelter or doing a project in a local care home.

After finalising their plans the young people will go on to deliver their chosen project. NCS staff, business volunteers and charities will support the teams of young people throughout the planning and delivering of their project, offering invaluable advice.

Phase 4 - Graduation

The Salford Foundation will invite your son to a graduation ceremony to celebrate all of their achievements. Each NCS graduate will receive a certificate that is signed by the Prime Minister as a record of their achievements.

NCS is founded on the three key principles of social cohesion, social engagement and social mobility. At Wellacre, we believe the NCS programme is an opportunity that every young person should experience, regardless of circumstances or any additional needs they may have.  Each place on NCS is worth £1500, however we only ask for a small contribution of £50.  The Salford Foundation offers bursaries so everyone can take part in NCS.

At Wellacre, we recognise the importance of the NCS for your son so we have taken the decision to make this an 'opt-out' programme. You will therefore see NCS listed on Parent Pay. If you wish to opt-out please email jduffy(at)wellacre.org
