LGBT Inclusion

Wellacre’s mission is to encourage a whole school approach to raising awareness, celebrating difference and preventing  homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying to promote and ensure lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusion throughout the school.

Our aim is to encourage equality, celebrate difference and diversity, bring young people together to celebrate what makes them and others unique, and to create a respectful, kind and inclusive environment both off and online for each other.

At Wellacre, RESPECT is a core value and we are committed to our anti-bullying practice. We recognise the issues faced by our students and we are constantly working to provide support.

We have designated and trained staff and students that help to create a supportive and inclusive environment, which is at the core of our philosophy.  We want our students to feel safe and happy and we provide various avenues for support and advice.

Students can access information from our Pastoral Base - here we have leaflets and advice which reach out to LGBT students and signpost the support on offer both in and out of school.

We have a team of trained student Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and Wellbeing Ambassadors that reinforce the school’s mission by offering support through drop-in sessions, as well as raising LGBT awareness and helping students develop a broader understanding of gender and sexuality through, for example, assemblies, RESPECT lessons and competitions.

The Rainbow Flag Award was launched by The Proud Trust in May 2017, which was successful in a funding bid from the Government Equalities Office, via the Department for Education, to launch initiatives that enable schools to effectively combat and prevent Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic (HBT) bullying and promote  lesbian, gay, bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) inclusion.

Our continuous work at Wellacre to promote equality and diversity will be assessed by the Proud Trust in the Summer term 2018 when we will aim to  be awarded the full Rainbow Flag Award.  To date, we have been awarded the 'Supportive Governors and Parents', 'Pastoral Support' and 'Effective Policies' awards for our work.
