Wellacre hosts annual Careers Fair

On Friday 9th March, Wellacre hosted a Careers Fair for all students in Years 7 to 11 as part of National Careers Week.

During Careers Week, there were opportunities in form and curriculum time for students to learn about new developments, for example, artificial intelligence in recruitment and careers such as ‘vlogging’.  All students were encouraged to think about ‘where they are heading’ and to prepare at least three questions to encourage discussion and engagement with exhibitors at the Careers Fair.

Wellacre staff shared their own career pathways with students with career path door signs. Students were interested to learn Misss Wicks, for example, has been employed as a Forensic Scientist, a Public Order Control Officer, a Housing Officer and a Shop Worker before training as a teacher. Staff shared how their career history helped develop key skills to build on their employability potential.

To complete the week, a wide variety of employers, education and training organisations joined Wellacre to provide inspiring careers and education information to all students across the school.

At the event, Pendleton College said:

“We were intrigued to hear about student career paths and where they see themselves in the future. Pendleton College is keen to help students get from A to B to achieve their career goals.”

Wellacre was grateful to the organisations who supported the event including Connexions, the Navy, Police, NHS, Glove Consulting, United Utilities, Unilever, Network Rail, Trafford Council, Access Creative College, Pendleton College, Trafford College, Bolton University, Liverpool John Moores University, GM Higher, Stegta, QA, The Growth Co, Juniper Training, Choose Hair,  and Future Works.

The annual Careers Fair proves to be a huge success year-on-year and students consistently give positive feedback on the information they receive at the event.

Harry Merrell, Wellacre’s Head Boy, said:

“I spoke to all our exhibitors and they were all interested to talk to Wellacre students on a one-to-one basis.  They were all enthusiastic, positive and keen to share opportunities and advice with students. They were also pleased and complimentary about how confident Wellacre students were when talking to them and that they asked lots of questions.””

The Careers Fair had a fantastic impact on Wellacre students and some shared their aspirations following the event:

Harry added:

“I found the Careers Fair very informative;  it was a great opportunity to talk to different providers.  It gave me more ideas about how to follow my career pathway into teaching and  and made the path I want to follow clearer for me.”

Year 8 form tutor Mrs Warren reported great enthusiasm from her students after the event:

“Some of my form are now aiming for places at Pendleton College following the Careers Fair. They used the careers questions they prepared in form time to find out what they need to do at Wellacre in order to reach their goals and speaking to Pendleton College has now encouraged them to work even harder.”

Wellacre was proud to read exhibitors’ positive comments on twitter:
