A Wellacre boy’s new best friend, Belle the beagle, has inspired an enthusiastic fundraising campaign for Dogs Trust Manchester.

Year 10 Wellacre student, Owen Morgan, has not only collared support and donations from his own school, but also his former primary school, Flixton Primary, and the community with an impressive campaign of fundraising ideas and events.

With over £800 raised so far and yet more ideas in the pipeline to raise even more, Owen is like a dog with a bone when it comes to showing Dogs Trust his gratitude.

Owen said:

“Last year, my family adopted Belle. She’d come over from Ireland after spending years in a medical testing facility.  She’s needed care and lots of help, and Dogs Trust Manchester has supported us with this.

“I want to raise money because Dogs Trust offer so much for dogs like Belle, and I feel that it is really important to give something back for everything they have done for my family.”

A talented juggler, Owen began by entertaining Wellacre staff, students and parents in school and at celebration events with non-stop juggling and a few extraordinary tricks thrown in!  He has also been collecting further donations at Parents’ Evenings and selling official Dogs Trust badges.

Owen contacted his former Headteacher at Flixton Primary School and organised an assembly to raise awareness of Dogs Trust Manchester and gain their support for a special non-uniform day.

Most recently, Owen spent a day in a family friend’s fishmongers ‘What’s the Catch?’ in Urmston. The shop generously supported Owen’s fundraising venture by offering free fish to any doggie visitors in return for donations.

As well as delivering the donated funds to Dogs Trust Manchester, Owen has also gifted donations of delicious dog treats for the four-legged residents to enjoy as they await their forever homes.  As a reward, he was delighted to be offered a full tour of the facility.

Wellacre’s Principal, Miss Wicks, said:

“We are so very proud of Owen’s determination and commitment to raising an incredible amount for Dogs Trust Manchester.  It is truly gratifying to see his tireless enthusiasm has been rewarded with so much support from our school and local community.  We wish him all the best in his continuing endeavours!”
