'SERVING STORIES' - Imperial War Museum

WELLACRE once again hosted the inspirational educational project ‘Serving Stories’, developed by the Imperial War Museum and to enable ex-forces personnel to share their stories with schools and young people.

WELLACRE welcomed four veterans and ex-forces personnel along with Tom England of the Imperial War Museum, to deliver a morning of interviews, discussion and teambuilding.

Our Students took the opportunity to question our guests at length. Learning about modern day conflicts whilst questioning the veterans about their personal experiences helped bring to life the causes and consequences of war.

With an exciting and lively mix of discussion and team building exercises. Serving Stories project provides our students with a brilliantly engaging learning opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of history, respect, aspiration and teamwork.

"The veteran visit was very interesting personally to me as I was able to empathise more with the veterans than if I had read their account in a book. I was able to ask how they felt and what went through their heads during their experiences. I was also given the opportunity to ask unlimited questions. I found out that one of the veterans, who served in the merchant navy, most memorable events was seeing his Captain airlifted from the ship. I also loved being able to see their expressions as they told their stories, it really added personality to the accounts. Overall I found the experience amazing and interesting."
