As a member of the Davyhulme Youth Club, youngsters were offered the opportunity to undertake a motorboat course at Stretford Marina.

Setting sail on the Prince Henry motorboat, Luke embarked on a 6 week training course plus a full day’s sailing assessment and was rewarded for his hard work.

Luke said:

“I really enjoyed the course, it was an opportunity to make friends at the marina and to learn more about sailing. I’m hoping to go use the qualification to do more sailing or perhaps go fishing with my grandad.”

During the motorboat course, Luke learnt about rope knotting, expelling the bilge, changing the tank diesel, checking gas and turning the boat safely on, as well as developing an understanding of waterways rules.

Luke has recently been working with Commonwealth Champion boxer Courtney Fry on the Moving Minds project, aimed at encouraging Wellacre students’ to strengthen their mental and physical wellbeing.

Luke added:

“Courtney Fry encouraged us to get out more and do more exercise.  I was interested in the motorboat course but what Courtney said to us really gave me the boost to go for it.

I enjoyed the experience; it was a really fun activity and a good opportunity to get out and try something new.”
