Welcoming Chinese teachers, from the Suman Centre

Wellacre staff and students invited teachers from China to join them on the playing field for an insight into British Sports and PE education.  In partnership with the Suman Centre, Old Trafford, a group of Chinese PE teachers spent a day exploring the cultural, social and educational environment at Wellacre.

Wellacre has worked with the Suman Centre for a number of years, supporting exchange visits between China and the UK and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes for visiting teachers and educational leaders.

Wellacre’s Leader of PE, Mr Linton, said:

“It was a pleasure for the PE department to host the Chinese teacher exchange and to showcase the curriculum, the quality of the provision and the calibre of student talent and leadership in sport.’’

Wellacre PE staff and students invited the exchange teachers to observe and participate in a Year 8 handball lesson focusing on a leadership strand.  This term, students have designed a lesson in developing shooting techniques in handball, including warm-up.

Year 10 BTEC Sport students were also observed practising for an assessment in leading sport activities.  Students took the lead in delivering a lesson in football short passing skills, from initial technique through to development and applying the skills in a match situation.

A Suman Centre representative said:

“The group is here to learn from British staff and students about teaching and learning in UK schools.  They have been impressed by the level of physical activity in PE lessons and how energetic and motivated the students are; this is in contrast to Chinese lessons which focus more on theory.

“They enjoyed taking part in the handball and football lessons; in particular, the handball lesson and it was their first experience of this sport!  They were really inspired by the role of student leadership in Wellacre lessons.”

At Wellacre, student leadership is a key strand not only in PE provision but also throughout the curriculum and school life.  Through leadership development, Wellacre provides opportunities for students of all abilities to excel and encourages students to build confidence and resilience, and experience team and management working situations.

Mr Linton, added:

“We were proud to offer an insight and understanding of the characteristics of our school and how this brings out the best in Wellacre boys.”
