Geography Students Extend Their Knowledge

To develop students’ knowledge in preparation for their GCSEs, Year 10 Geography students travelled to Salford and the Peak District on fieldwork excursions.

In June, students visited Crowden Brook in the Peak District for GCSE physical fieldwork.  Working alongside the Learning and Discovery Team from the Peak District National Park, students conducted a river study, collecting data on various aspects of the river, such as velocity, gradient, width and depth.

Mr Baker, Leader of Geography, said:

“This trip is a great extension of classroom learning and brings to life what the students have learnt in lessons.  It improves their understanding of river processes, their experience of different landforms across Crowden Brook and provides an excellent opportunity of working with industry professionals.”

Salford Quays was the site for the human fieldwork trip, with Year 10 Geography students collecting data to answer the GCSE inquiry question “Has the redevelopment of Salford Quays impacted the environment?”

Visiting specific locations in the area, students collected environmental data and also carried out a public survey, stopping community members to complete a questionnaire.

Mr Baker added:

“This fieldwork trip helps students develop their primary data collection techniques, and later they employ this data into graphs and charts to interpret all the information gathered.”

“With fieldwork excursions, our aim is to offer firsthand experience in order to aid students’ understanding and to develop their skills for a future career in Geography.”

Year 10, Nathan, said:

“I am really starting to see the bigger picture for the fieldwork and how each stage of the data collection and analysis process follows on from the other.”
