Year 7 students have been putting pen to paper for an exciting competition by The National Literacy Trust.

The National Literacy Trust competition celebrates Jeff Kinney's latest book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series 'The Meltdown'. Students were challenged to write their own diary entry of up to 500 words about the most exciting snow day they could imagine.

During English lessons, students have been studying features of diaries and exploring ways to describe extreme weather.

Teacher of English, Mrs Warren, said:

“As Jeff Kinney is a favourite author of our Year 7s, they really engaged with the task and had a lot of fun writing their own examples of Wimpy Kid diaries!

“The competition really focused on reading for pleasure and helped to get students excited for new releases of books; it also encouraged those who may previously have been reluctant writers to release their inner author.”

As well as entering 50 students into the national competition,  Wellacre’s English department decided to celebrate students’ hard work and effort by naming a Wellacre winner and presenting them with a £10 book voucher.

We’re pleased to announce the winner was George, who used a wide range of imagery in his diary entry about building snow castles and defeating 'Beastly Barry'.

Wellacre’s winner George, Year 7, said:

“I really like books and reading so winning the voucher will be really helpful! The competition was a unique chance for children to experience writing like their favourite authors.”

Other students also enjoyed the competition and commented:

Matthew: “It was a good experience.”

Anthony: “It was a good and well-thought out plan of how to improve children’s writing.”

Harrison: “It was a fun writing experience for children of all ages.”

The National Literacy Trust competition is open to children nationwide in Years 3 - 7, and students have the chance to win a signed Wimpy Kid print by Jeff Kinney and lots of books for themselves and their school.   We wish all our students the best of luck in the competition.
